Evening Adhkar is a set of Quranic verses and supplications that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ consistently recited every afternoon until nightfall and highly recommended to all humanity. It is not only the perfect spiritual ritual for Muslims to end a busy day and return to their families, but also a spiritual haven for modern people to seek inner peace in the bustling night and ward off hidden harms.
In Islamic jurisprudence and daily life, Evening Adhkar plays the following three crucial roles:
Not an obligation, but a beautiful Sunnah: Evening Adhkar is a highly recommended Sunnah rather than a mandatory Fard. If you miss it due to an extremely busy life, Allah will not burden you with sin; but by spending just a few minutes reciting it, you will earn immeasurable blessings and rewards.
A Muslim's nightly protective shield: Nightfall is a time when all things rest. The Adhkar includes the last three short Surahs of the Quran and various protective supplications, acting like an invisible shield to protect you and your family from unexpected calamities, the whispers of Shaytan, and unintentional evil eye and jealousy throughout the night.
The key to reviewing daily blessings and reliance: Sleep is known as the "lesser death" in Islamic teachings. Before handing our souls over to Allah, reviewing the day's gains and clearing accumulated restlessness through Evening Adhkar marks a perfect end to the day's efforts and unlocks nightly Barakah.
From after Asr prayer or the beginning of Maghrib prayer until midnight or before going to sleep. If your evening is too rushed, making it up before sleep will still grant you complete protection and rewards.
While the core essence of Evening Adhkar echoes that of the morning, its nature is more introspective, focusing on seeking inner peace and clearing the burdens accumulated during the day. By consistently reciting it every evening or before sleep, you will receive the following 5 priceless blessings:
Nightfall is when all creatures return to their nests, and it is also a period when many hidden trials and whispers of Shaytan are more active. Evening Adhkar includes the highly noble Ayat al-Kursi and the last three short Surahs (Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas). By reciting these revelations, we equip our bodies and bedrooms with the armor provided by Allah as night falls. Through His power, we effectively ward off the intrusions of Shaytan, terrifying nightmares, the jealousy of others, and sudden calamities in our nightly decree.
Unlike the morning which faces the unknown and seeks breakthroughs, the evening is the end of the day. No matter how business went or whether work was smooth, we follow the Sunnah of the Prophet before sleep to express the deepest praise and gratitude for all provisions (Rizq) obtained during the day. By completely handing over the results of the day (Tawakkul) to the All-Knowing and All-Powerful Lord, we can sever our attachment to worldly gains and losses, gain inner contentment, and allow our souls to fall asleep peacefully under Allah's watch.
The Quran says: "Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest." After a busy day, our minds and hearts are often filled with exhaustion, workplace interpersonal friction, and survival pressure. Evening Adhkar is the best tool to clear emotions. When we sincerely recite the Adhkar and express our inner humility to Allah, the restlessness and anxiety accumulated throughout the day dissolve in reverence to Him, helping us regain long-lost purity and calmness, preparing us for high-quality deep sleep.
Health and peace are the foundation of our existence in this world. Evening Adhkar teaches us to ask Allah for 'Afiyah for our "body, hearing, and sight" as night falls. This is not only a prayer for protection against illness and sudden nightly pain, but also a reminder to always cherish this blessing, using our healthy bodies and senses in good deeds that obey and remember Allah.
In our daily words and deeds, we inevitably commit unintentional slip-ups or other mistakes. Evening Adhkar includes the highly noble Sayyid al-Istighfar. The Prophet ﷺ taught that whoever recites it with certainty at night and dies that night will be among the people of Paradise. Through sincere repentance before sleep every night, we reaffirm our firm belief in Tawhid, wash away the day's dust, and face the new day in the purest state of faith.
